Who do you think is/was the most dominant Athelete in their respective sport sport:
Tiger Woods Roger Federer Michael Phelps Wayne Gretzky Michael Jordan Pele Babe Ruth Lance Armstrong
list could go on... my personal opinion is the Michael Phelps is the most dominant athelete. I mean he's set a world record for each of the four golds he has already won in this olympics.

Wayne Gretzky, duh....
He has 1000 more points than the 2nd place guy..
Federer and Woods haven't caught up to any records yet, and if they have career ending injuries they won't be dominating anything.
Michael Jordan is #2 on the list imo because of how he won all his titles and Phelps is #3.

Gretzky is called The Great One for a reason. I'd say Wayne and MJ are the perfect ideal role model players for their sports.

I think Greztky, MJ, Pele and Babe Ruth. The reason why I haven't mentioned Phelps is because his career is not over, even though everyone by now knows that he'll be the most dominant.

Its also much easier to put someone who has done his thing and is done already.
Phelps, Woods, Federer and current greats can still have career ending injuries, or at least injuries that will mess them up for the rest of their careers.

I think the argument has to be viewed in what the person did in their prime. It's pretty much proven that people are quick to dismiss stars of the past in favor of those in the present. With that said, Tiger Woods is by far the most dominant athlete. If you've ever played, you know golf isn't easy. But to win a U.S. Open with a torn ACL? That's unheard of. I'd also throw Lance Armstrong (assuming he's clean) in the mix. If Phelps gets the three more, then he, too, is up there.

Wayne Gretzky - 8 MVP's
1000 more points than 2nd place.
Wayne Gretzky - 2857 Mark Messier - 1887 Gordie Howe - 1850 Ron Francis - 1798 Marcel Dionne - 1771
That alone makes him the most dominant person to ever play a professional sport. Sure Tiger Woods is awesome, but he isn't dominating Golf to the point that hes CLEARLY considered the best to ever play. Wayne Gretzky has 1000 more points than any other person to ever play the game of hockey. That is just incredible when you think about it.

I think at this point Phelps is definitely the best to ever swim, and is already the best olympian of all time. I mean he's not even done yet and he has the most olympic medals in history. He can not swim in the next 3 races and still be the best. I mean consider the fact that the field now is better than ever. Its to the point where the second place swimmer ends up breaking the previous world record. Phelps feat is unmatched, not to mention he might swim in London 2012. And thanks Magic for mentioning Lance Armstrong, I can't believe I forgot him.

I don't think that you can judge Phelps on what his competitors are doing...a lot of the success of the field in general has a lot to do with the Speedo swim suits that just came out....I did a presentation on that shit and it's unreal. It's definitely a huge advantage.

Hmm Interesting, I haven't heard much about the swim suits, but regardless the field is very competitive, its not like there is no talent out there. Phelps is just superhuman to say the least because of the way he's absolutely obliterating records. I think Tiger Woods in terms of dominance comes right after considering I believe he won a major by 14 strokes if I'm not mistaken, that's insane.

I wonder what they'll come up with? Water-repelling swim suits? Lol.

They are legal, but they definitely poke holes in the records and times of swimmers in the past, who weren't able to use the technology that phelps and others enjoy today because it simply wasn't available.

Phelps has broken these records repeatedly though. It isnt like he is just now breaking records. They just said after the 200 IM he has now broken it like 20 times. The suit no doubt it much more advanced then in the past, but the dude is a freak of nature. He definetly goes down as the best swimmer as all time, but it is hard to compare sports imo.
